Bucharest to Sibiu

We were up bright and early as we had a long, 4 hour drive to Sibiu.  Breakfast was OK, cereal, cold meats/cheeses plus a few Romanian specialities like Spinach and Feta pie which was very nice.  The hotel was full of attendees to a conference who talked very loudly over breakfast and seemed to be trying to outsmart one another with their intelligence.  What they were experts in and the conference all about we don't know as the subject matter went over our heads, but they were quite annoying.

Driving out of the city the satnav was invaluable.  Driving standards are better than we'd imagined although most tend to drive quite fast and the reason for why there are so many lanes in each street soon became apparent as many times cars just randomly stopped in them and you had to swerve around.  Still we negotiated it with ease and even managed to find a Carrefour and buy something for lunch.  Whilst wandering around it we came to the fish counter and it was a first - tanks of live fish for you to choose your victim.

Driving through the outskirts of one village there was this lovely piece of artwork.

I took a photo of the sign thinking I'd be able to learn all about the sculpture.

But unfortunately this is the translation:  It is forbidden to touch the sculptures representing a number of seven horses in natural size.  It is forbidden to throw packaging, papers, bottles, cigarettes, seeds, as well as any other waste.  Climbing on stones and in wells is prohibited.  Non-compliance with the above-mentioned provisions is a contravention and is sanctioned as such.  So I'm none the wiser and can find nothing on the internet either.

After about 2 1/2 hours drive we stopped at Cozia Monastery which had been described as an absolute must see, but unfortunately we found it incredibly boring and rather soulless.

The monks' quarters looked to be modern buildings.

We walked down to the river but even that was rather uninspiring, just a weir in the distance.

Over the road was a graveyard so we wandered over to have a look.

This separate section was a war grave (I think Romania changed sides various times).

Arriving in Sibiu just before 1500 (earliest check-in) once again we were extremely lucky with parking.  Just outside the hotel was one space and the receptionist confirmed it was safe and free parking, which was just as well as the hotel's parking consisted of 3 very tight spaces adjacent to the open air dining area.

Checking in was a bit of a faff as the young lady had trouble getting the room key to work but eventually we went up to our room which was tiny but very smart and clean.  We dropped the bags and made the short 15 min walk to the centre of town.
